Southwest Tucson
Where the city opens into mountain trails, desert neighborhoods, and the Santa Cruz River valley
Southwest Tucson stretches from the neighborhoods around Ajo Way and Mission Road toward Drexel Heights, Valencia Road, and the open desert beyond. It is a varied part of the region: established residential streets, local businesses, and shopping corridors give way to wider views of the Tucson Mountains.
This area also includes places with distinct histories and identities. Mission San Xavier del Bac stands on the Tohono O’odham Nation’s San Xavier District, while the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Casino Del Sol brings dining and entertainment to the Valencia Road corridor. Together with the surrounding neighborhoods and desert landscape, they make southwest Tucson a place best explored beyond a single main street.

LOCAL LIFESTYLE
Southwest Tucson has room to spread out. Neighborhoods such as Midvale Park and Drexel Heights offer a familiar rhythm of homes, parks, schools, and everyday errands. Farther west, the streets meet the foothills of the Tucson Mountains, where a trail or a sunset drive can feel close to home.
There is no single look to the area. Postwar homes, later subdivisions, commercial corridors, and desert properties reflect different periods of Tucson’s growth. The Santa Cruz River runs through its eastern side, connecting today’s neighborhoods to a landscape shaped by generations of O’odham life and agriculture.
DINING AND GATHERING PLACES
Food here is found in neighborhood restaurants, roadside stops, and places worth making a trip for. Funland Raspados and Munchies on Ajo Way is a stop for a cold treat. Near Mission San Xavier del Bac, Coyote Kitchen and Gift Shop offers another place to pause and eat.
Casino Del Sol has several dining options, including PY Steakhouse for a longer evening out. The area’s food story also extends beyond restaurants: San Xavier Cooperative Farm grows traditional O’odham crops and helps sustain agricultural knowledge tied to this land.
