Before the right house comes along

Before the right house comes along

Sometimes the right house appears before you’re planning to move. Building a relationship with an agent early can help you understand your options and feel prepared to make a thoughtful decision when a home captures your attention.

Sometimes a house brings people into the market who weren’t planning to move. That was something we observed with the response to the Fridlind Residence on Glenn Street. People connected with its warmth, its craftsmanship, and the feeling of a home shaped slowly over time. For some, it was precisely what they had been looking for. For others, it opened up a possibility they hadn’t yet considered.

We heard from many people who weren’t yet working with an agent. Other buyers discovered the house through agents who shared it with their own communities. Showing requests quickly filled the calendar, and finding time to experience the property became a challenge. It brought up something worth talking about: when a particular house captures your attention, how do you give yourself the best opportunity to consider it thoughtfully?

Start the conversation early

You don’t need to have a moving date or a perfectly defined wish list to begin working with an agent. Often, those early conversations help you understand what you are looking for. Perhaps it’s a historic neighborhood, room for a studio, or a house with a strong connection to the landscape. Perhaps you know how you want a home to feel but haven’t yet found the words for it. A good agent listens, asks questions, and helps translate those preferences into a search. Over time, that shared understanding makes it easier to recognize a property worth pursuing.

Make room for a thoughtful decision

When a house attracts significant interest, the pace can feel surprising. There may be limited showing availability and little time between a first visit and deciding whether to make an offer. Having a relationship with an agent already in place can help. Your agent can coordinate a showing, gather available information, discuss comparable properties, and help you identify the questions that matter most. Preparation also means understanding your budget and having financing conversations early, if needed. The purpose is to give yourself enough clarity to make a considered decision, including the decision to let a house go.

Look beyond the photograph

Social media has become a meaningful way to discover homes, especially properties whose character doesn’t fit neatly into a search filter. A photograph can introduce you to a place you might otherwise have missed. Discovery is only the beginning. Understanding how a house lives, its condition, its setting, and how it fits your needs takes more conversation and investigation. An agent’s work continues through that process: helping you weigh information, shape an offer, coordinate inspections, and navigate the decisions that follow.

Find someone who understands what matters to you

For us, a home’s value includes its relationship to place, the quality of its spaces, and the care invested in it. We want to understand what you respond to, too. The right working relationship gives you someone to call when a house stops you mid-scroll, and someone who can help you look at it with both enthusiasm and perspective.

Even if your search is still taking shape, that conversation can begin now. Reach out, we would love to start the conversation.
